QR Code Best Practices for Print and Digital Media
Nothing damages a marketing campaign faster than printing thousands of flyers, brochures, or product boxes with a QR code that refuses to scan. Following these technical best practices ensures your QR codes work consistently across different lighting, distances, and camera models.
1. The 10:1 Sizing Formula
The most frequent error in print design is printing QR codes too small. A reliable rule of thumb is the 10:1 distance-to-size ratio:
Scan Distance Formula:
Minimum Width = Expected Scanning Distance divided by 10.
- • Handheld items (menus, business cards): at least 2 cm x 2 cm (0.8 x 0.8 in)
- • Posters and table stands (1 meter distance): at least 10 cm x 10 cm (4 x 4 in)
- • Billboards (10 meters distance): at least 1 meter x 1 meter (3.3 x 3.3 ft)
2. Preserve the Quiet Zone
The quiet zone is the blank margin surrounding the exterior of your QR code pattern. Smartphone camera algorithms use this blank boundary to detect where the code starts and separates from background graphics. Maintain a clear border equal to at least four modules (dots) of blank space all the way around the code.
3. Keep Strong Color Contrast
Always prioritize scannability over extreme artistic styling:
- Dark foreground, light background: Cameras expect darker dots on a lighter field. Inverted codes (white pattern on dark background) are unsupported by several built-in camera readers.
- Avoid glossy finishes over the code: Highly reflective laminations cause harsh glare under bright indoor lights, confusing optical sensors.
4. Use Dynamic Links to Protect Physical Investments
When generating a QR code, point it to a dynamic EZY short link. If your website changes, an event date moves, or an offering updates, you can change the target URL in your EZY dashboard in seconds. Your printed materials stay completely usable.
5. Always Add a Short Call to Action
Never place a lone QR code without instructions. Add a concise prompt directly beneath the code such as "Scan to view menu", "Scan for 20% discount", or "Scan to follow on Instagram". Clear intent encourages immediate action.
